Slipware Courses

There are no courses planned at the moment.

The aim of this course is to have some fun and take a few risks with free form slip decoration, and to spice up decorating skills and improve students' making skills with throwing or slab-work. Raw glazed once fired slipware is ideal for this spontaneous approach and with a maximum of six students there will be plenty of one to one tuition.

In the light and airy workshop there are four modern electric wheels and two seated kick wheels to choose from ('Leach' type), and also a slab roller. All the clays, slips and glaze materials used are prepared at the pottery for their character and workability.

The week begins at nine am on Monday with an introduction to the materials and methods that we will be using. We will look at some finished slipware as examples of the various techniques that can be used, and after a quick tour of the workshop to familiarise ourselves, we will get down to some clay work.

Students can work on their own projects and/or be guided by Mark who will be available for tuition and demonstration between 9am and 5pm. The workshop will be open from 8am until 8pm to enable students to make the most of their day. Teas and coffee will be available at any time and a delicious home made vegetarian lunch will be served.

We will aim to have all our work glazed by Friday going home time, and up to ten medium sized pots will be fired in the next scheduled firing. Any others can be taken home for firing. There are occasionally opportunities for students to help with firings.

The Pottery is situated about 12 miles from the Suffolk Heritage Coast which is home to RSPB and National Trust nature reserves where there are some wonderful walks. You can also explore the footpaths that cross the fields surrounding the pottery where there is always something interesting to see in the form of wildlife and landscape. The cost for the five day course including lunch, refreshments and fired pots is £420.
